A British ballerina and actress born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, UK. She was the prima ballerina of Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet. She had been training since childhood and joined the company in 1942. For 10 years, she had the leading role in several of the most famous ballets such as The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, and Swan Lake. She made her Broadway debut playing Titania on A Midsummer Night's Dream. Her onscreen debut was on the film The Red Shoes (1948), her most famous film to date. Other works of hers include Peeping Tom (1960), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951), and The Story of Three Loves (1953). She was married to Ludovic Kennedy and had 4 children. She died of septicaemia and a urinary tract infection on 31 January 2006 in Oxfordshire, UK.
