He was awarded the Scroll of Honour Award in Norway in 1950, as well as the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 1964 for his services to ballet. He was awarded the Australian Man of the Year Award in 1965, as well as the KBE (Knight of the Order of the British Empire) in 1968 for his services to dance. He also received the Swedish Knight of the North Star in 1975, and the Cedar Medal from Lebanon.
The Australian Entertainment Industry Association's annual awards are named after him, and he established a theater named after him in 1984 in Mount Gambier, South Australia, his birthplace, the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.
