An American actor, he was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 16, 1903. Bergen received an Honorary Academy Award in 1938 for his creation of the wooden statuette Charlie McCarthy, and he also received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1979. He's best known for his work as a ventriloquist and for creating his characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, which appeared with him in a number of radio shows, films and TV shows. He was married to actress Frances Bergen, and they had two children, including actress Candice Bergen. His works include: Song of the Open Road (1944), Letter of Introduction (1938), and Fun and Fancy Free (1947). Edgar died in 1978 of kidney disease at the age of 75.
