He was an American actor, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, as James Russell Lane. His notable works include Johnny Tremain (1957), The Harder They Fall (1956), You Are There (1953-1955), and The Alaskans (1960). He was married to the actress Sara Anderson, with whom he had a daughter. He died at the age of 87 on October 10, 1986, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
