He was educated at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and in the mid-1920s, he appeared in London theater and English films until World War II, when he returned to the United States to continue his film appearances in Hollywood, playing villain roles. Bernard died in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, on November 23, 1972, at the age of 79.
