• A German film, television, and stage actor, born in Wartenberg, Bavaria, Germany. He married the painter and sculptor Claire Volkhart (1918–1935); they remained together until her...Read more death. His most notable works include Romanoff and Juliet (1961), The Hitler Gang (1944), Strange Affair (1944), and Wilson (1944). A Bavarian stage and film actor of Austrian descent (his father was a famous surgeon). He served as a cavalry lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I and immigrated to the United States in 1930, becoming a US citizen. He studied medicine in Germany and also studied acting, achieving theatrical success in Europe and on the New York stage. He gained experience in directing plays, and from 1943 until the 1960s, he acted in American, Italian, and French films, and appeared in television series, often playing the roles of Nazi officers. He died in New York, USA, on November 2, 2002, at the age of 106.
