An American film actor, born in Syracuse, New York, USA. He got married three times and had no children. Among his most notable film works are Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925), The Mutiny of the Elsinore (1920), Life's Greatest Problem (1918), and Salome (1922). He was a prolific actor, spanning the silent era, through the sound era, and until the mid-1950s. He participated in the Spanish-American War and was a member of MGM's stock company from its inception until 1924. He played the roles of a fisherman, waiter, barman, detective, jailer, porter, clerk, senator, officer, captain, pirate, and gang leader. Mitchell died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, on August 24, 1956, at the age of 76.
