He earned a Ph.D. in religious studies from the University of Toronto and is fluent in four languages: Arabic, English, French, and Urdu. A proponent of interfaith dialogue, he has published more than 60 scholarly articles on Islam and Muslims, lectured in academic circles around the world, and appeared on numerous television programs, most notably Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and The Tavis Smiley Show. He was a consultant for the documentary series The Story of God with Morgan Freeman (2016).
