He was born to a Mexican father and a Native American mother. He dropped out of school and joined the Mexican Military Academy, where he achieved the rank of colonel. He rebelled against the dictatorship and joined the revolution that broke out in 1923. He was imprisoned and fled to the United States, working in a laundry, as a waiter, a longshoreman, a press assistant, and a construction worker in Hollywood studios, a job that led him to film. He died in Mexico City, Federal District, Mexico, of a heart attack at the age of 82.
