(1969), Only When I Laugh (1981), The Last of Sheila (1973), and Will Penny (1967). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and won a Golden Globe Award. She was also known as a social activist. Her father was of Irish descent, and her mother was of Italian descent. She was raised Catholic, dropped out of high school, and became a model. She attended acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Actors Studio and appeared on Broadway in 1959. She also worked off-Broadway and won several awards. Joan Hackett died in Encino, California, USA, of ovarian cancer at the age of 49.
