An American prolific cinema, theater, and television actor, born in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA. He began his career in stock theater and on Broadway, then toured Europe before returning to the United States in 1947 and joining the Federal Theater Group. He worked in cinema during the thirties and played the roles of eccentrics, scientists, and petty crooks. He was briefly blacklisted during the McCarthy era, but it did not affect his career, and he worked during that period in the ceramics trade. Among his notable works are One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Spartacus (1960), and Throw Momma from the Train (1987). He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California, USA, on December 20, 1992, at age 89.
