He was educated at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School and then at Columbia University, where he participated in various sports, including American football and bicycle racing. He also spent eight seasons as a goalie for the New York City hockey team. Before entering the entertainment industry, he worked in real estate and held a position as a supervisor in a diamond-cutting factory. He later turned to the stage, beginning his Broadway career in 1913, where he continued until 1933. He began his film career in the early 1930s and continued until his death. Robert Strange died in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, on February 22, 1952, at the age of 70.
