Biography

A German director, producer and screenwriter, born Maximillian Oppenheimer in Saarbrücken, Germany. He began his career as a theater actor and director in the 1920s. He initially worked as an assistant director, then directed his first short film I'd Rather Have Cod Liver Oil in...Read more 1931. He immigrated to France in 1933 after the Nazi Party took power and because he was Jewish, he became a French citizen in 1938. He also worked in the Netherlands and Italy. In 1941, he immigrated again to the United States, where he worked for 10 years before returning to France in 1950. Starting in 1954 he also worked in Germany again. All of his works feature his signature smooth camera movements and tracking shots. He's known for The Tender Enemy, La Ronde, and Le Plaisir. He married actress Hildegard Wall in 1926, and their marriage continued until his death. He died of heart failure on March 25, 1957 in Hamburg, Germany.
