A Polish-born American character actor in film, television, and radio, born in Lodz, Lodzki, Poland. He was a vaudeville and Broadway star, and came to the United States with his Jewish family at the age of ten. He played street roles as a thug, or the roles of powerful people, or the roles of hotel or court clerks. He also played comedic roles. He retired in the early 1960s after going blind. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his film activities. He was married twice and had no children. Among his notable works are Some Like It Hot (1959), The Front Page (1931) and Five Star Final (1931). He died from complications of a stroke in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, on May 26, 1967, at age 64.
