American actor, born in Opelousas, Louisiana, on June 22, 1916. He was married to Betty Jean Van Allen (1942-2002) and she remained with him until her death. He attended Soldan High School and studied music at Washington University in St. Louis. After performing several plays on Broadway, he toured to present a musical. After spending years of armed service in the US Army during World War II, he moved to New York and studied the American theater. In the fifties, he participated in musical films and on television. He began with the roles of men of integrity, and then turned into heavy characters in the world of crime and Western films. Among his most important works are: That Darn Cat! (1965), Tombstone Territory (1957-1960), Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), and There's No Business Like Show Business (1954). He died in Pacific Palisades, California, on July 10, 2005, of Alzheimer's disease.
