British actress, born in Newton Heath, Manchester, UK on 23 December 1916. She attended RADA and graduated in 1938. She worked in the theater for several years until she appeared on the West End. She made her onscreen debut in The Guinea Pig (1949). Her most notable works include Prime Suspect (1991), Coronation Street (1960), and The Secret Garden (1960). She made her final appearance in 1995 in Heartbeat. She married twice and had no children. She died of pancreatic cancer on 29 June 1995 in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, UK
