American actor born in St. Helens, Oregon, on 28 April 1917. He began his career as a stage actor in 1937 in a Shakespearean stage production. In the late 1930s, he enrolled at Long Beach College, and worked at radio stations in Southern California, then earned a degree from the University of California. After WWII, he began working in Hollywood. His notable works include The War of the Worlds (1953), Picket Fences (1992-1994), and The Thing from Another World (1951). He was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995. He died on 20 July 2006 in Woodland Hills, California.
