American actor, producer and writer, born in Memphis, Tennessee, USA on March 7, 1923. He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1971, and a Humanitas Prize in 1984. Among his notable works are: Maude (1976-1978), Gimme a Break! (1983-1987), and The Carol Burnett Show (1970-1978). He died in Westwood, California, USA on January 30, 1995.
