A British actress, born on June 11, 1886, in Reading, Berkshire, England. At the age of 13, Lilian Fontaine got a scholarship from Reading College for her musical talent. She also studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She was the mother of actresses Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland. She appeared in supporting roles in two of her daughter Joan's films, Ivy (1947) and The Bigamist (1953), and in the 1950s, she appeared in a few TV shows. Her notable works include Time Out of Mind (1947), The Lost Weekend (1945), and The Locket (1946). She died on February 20, 1975, in Santa Barbara, California, USA, of cancer.
