British musician, born in St. Helens, Merseyside, UK, on 29 April, 1879. He was an orchestra conductor affiliated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which he founded, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as well. He was the first international British conductor. His works in film include Atonement (2007), The Red Shoes (1948), and The Tales of Hoffmann (1951). He won a Grammy Award in 1961. He married three times and had two children. He died of a stroke on 8 March, 1961, in London, UK.
