American sports journalist, broadcaster, and writer, born on March 25, 1918, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. He became influential during his tenure with ABC Sports from 1953 until 1985. He also appeared several times with Dean Martin in the 1970s. He was a lawyer before becoming a sports broadcaster. After his law career, he began working as a radio sports reporter before being hired by ABC to cover sports events for television. He had a special friendship with the boxer Muhammad Ali, which included being one of the first journalists to address him by his Islamic name after he changed it. He was ranked #5 by the American Association of Sports Broadcasters in their list of the 50 Greatest Sports Broadcasters of All Time. He died on April 23, 1995, in Gramercy Park, Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA, from a heart embolism.
