A prolific British character actor, born to a Jewish family in Hackney, London, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of an antique dealer. Sydney Tafler married actress Jay Shelton (1944-1979), they had three children, and she remained with him until his death. Among his most important works are It Always Rains on Sunday (1947), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Operation Diplomat (1953), and The Birthday Party (1968). Sydney Tafler began his career on stage and was famous for many film and television performances from the 1940s to the 1970s. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1936 and performed classical roles on stage at the West End and Old Vic theatres. The famous director Lewis Gilbert was the husband of his sister Hylda Gilbert, and he involved him in many of his works. Sydney Tafler died in Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England, United Kingdom, on November 8, 1979, from cancer at the age of 63.
