She returned to Palestine in 1974 and became Professor at Birzeit University. She also worked as an advisor in the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1991, she was selected to be a member of the Palestinian delegation to peace negotiations with Israel. She was the first Palestinian woman to participate in these negotiations. In 1996, Ashrawi was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council. She served in the Legislative Council until 2006. In 2009, she was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization. She appeared as herself in Human Flow (2017).
