An American film actor, born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on May 4, 1893 as Royal Edwin Butler. He began his career in silent films and continued to work after sound was introduced to films. His career lasted five decades, during which he performed supporting roles such as a doctor, a driver, a prisoner and a bartender. He married actress Alice Richey (1916-1973), they had two children, and she remained with him until his death. Among his notable works are Strangers in the Night (1944), Sky Liner (1949) and House of Errors (1942). He died in Desert Hot Springs, California, USA, on July 28, 1973.
