A German architect, born in Aachen, Germany. He is famous for designing the first building with a steel frame in 1927, at an exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany. He served as director of the Bauhaus, a pioneering school of modern art, design, and architecture before it was closed during the period of Nazi rule in Germany, causing him to immigrate to the United States and then assume the position of head of the architecture school in what is known today as Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
