A Czech film director and screenwriter, born in Ostrava, Czechia. She is considered one of the most important figures in Czechoslovak cinema of all time. She studied at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. She then worked as an art editor, then began directing films that were well received by critics. Her notable credits include Something Different (1963), Pearls of the Deeps (1965) and Wolf's Hole (1987). She died on March 12, 2014.
