An English stage, film and television actress of German origins, born in Hackney, London, England, UK. She received her education at Coombe Hill School, and began standing on stage in 1908. She worked in cinema and then television, and played the roles of spinster aunts, widows, or elderly ladies. She became President of RADA in 1950. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1959 for services to drama. She appeared in the Royal National Theatre for the last time when she was 101 years old. She was married twice and had one child. Among her credits are Night of the Demon (1957), The Franchise Affair (1951) and Drake of England (1935). She died in Hammersmith, London, England, UK on September 12, 1990, at age 101.
