An Indigenous Canadian film and television actor, born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, as Harold Jay Smith. He excelled in wrestling, horse racing, football, boxing and hockey, and became a famous lacrosse player before entering the cinematic field as a stuntman in 1937. After his service in World War II, he returned to cinema and he did stereotypical small roles, as an Indian warrior in Western films before he gained fame in Key Largo in 1948. He's best known for playing Tonto in the Western television series The Lone Ranger and two other films. He became a spokesperson for improving the image of Indigenous people in the media. He was a high school physical education teacher in California during the late 1960s. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1979 for his television work, and won the Golden Boot Award in 1990. He married twice and had five children. He died of a stroke in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, on March 5, 1980, at age 67.
