His most well-known contributions were as a creator of the well-known animated character Woody Woodpecker and the founder of the Walter Lantz Productions studio. At the age of twelve, he enrolled in a correspondence school to learn how to sketch. He worked for the New York American newspaper and pursued his painting studies at the Art Students League of New York. Before relocating to Hollywood and opening his animation studio there in 1928, he began working in the animation division of the International Film Service studio when he was sixteen. In addition, he visited veterans and entertained soldiers during the Vietnam War. Some of his most notable works include Alaska Sweepstakes (1936), The Merry Old Soul (1933), Jolly Little Elves (1934), and His First Flame (1927). He passed away in Burbank, California, United States, on March 22, 1994, from heart failure, at the age of 94.
