Due to limited theatrical opportunities in Australia, he settled in Britain to pursue a career in theater. His most notable works include Melba (1988), Barrier Reef (1971), Port of...Read more Escape (1956), and The Long Memory (1953). He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and in 1992, he was awarded the Order of Australia (AO), among other awards and recognitions. He married the late actress Googie Withers in 1948, and they had three children, including actress Joanna McCallum and actor-producer Nicholas McCallum. He passed away on February 3, 2010, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, due to leukemia.
