An American film, actor born in Portland, Oregon, USA. He served in the US Marine Corps on the China front in 1912 and in World War I. After the war, he worked as a horse wrangler. With his unattractive and unforgettable face, he attracted the attention of filmmakers, especially John Ford, and he began to get small acting roles. He re-enlisted in 1942 during World War II in the US Navy and served as a chief warrant officer. He received the Silver Star after being wounded on the North African front, and after the war, he continued to work as an actor and military technical adviser in movies. He was married three times and had three children. Among his notable works are Fort Apache (1948), Tripoli (1950), and Way Out West (1930). He died in Manhattan Beach, California, USA, on August 16, 1964, at age 68.
