An American actor, born in New York, USA, as George Joseph Mathews. He was educated in Brooklyn, and he had an extensive career on stage in the early thirties, then he appeared for the first time on Broadway in 1937. He played the roles of strict military characters. He also worked in classic plays, and he toured with some of his colleagues, including Anthony Quinn. In 1943, he began his film career, and he also appeared in television shows in the late forties. He married stage actress Mary Haynsworth (1951-1984), who stayed with him until his death. Among his notable works are Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), Pat and Mike (1952), and The Last Wagon (1956). He died of heart disease in Caesars Head, South Carolina, USA, on November 7, 1984, at age 73.
