He graduated from private schools in York and worked for the NE Railway Company before joining the army, and after his discharge, he worked in acting. He appeared in cinema in 1934, and in the late thirties, he began appearing in television films. At the beginning of World War II, he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and his service ended in 1944 after he was promoted to squadron leader. He also continued acting during the war, and after the war, he worked in theater and television. He gave acting lessons at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He married Doris Todd (1922-1955), they had a child, and she remained with him until his death. Among his notable works are The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men (1952), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), and The Quatermass Experiment (1953). He died in Putney, London, England, UK on August 23, 1955, from a heart attack, at age 58.
