He grew up in Liverpool and received his higher education at Liverpool College. He worked with his father in the family jewelery company, then joined Bristol Theological College, to become an Anglican priest, but in the end he joined the Liverpool Theater Company. He trained to become an actor in theatre, radio, cinema and television, and also worked in television commercials. He was drafted into the Air Force during World War II, and after his service ended, due to the closure of civilian theaters, he worked in entertaining soldiers with the ENSA Foundation. After retirement, he and his wife lived in Australia next to their youngest son and grandchildren, until he died in Brisbane, Australia, on October 7, 1999, at the age of 85 years.
