American film star Winona Ryder has accused Hollywood legend Mel Gibson of being an anti-Semite and a homophobe. In an interview with GQ magazine, Winona Ryder (39), has recalled an incident which she says occurred 15 years ago prior to Gibson’s much publicized controversial statements. According to Winona Ryder she was attending a party where Mel Gibson was present. Ryder recalled that she was at the party in the company of a homosexual friend when Mel Gibson proceeded to make what she has described as a “horrendous” joke about homosexuals.Ryder continued by saying that Gibson then learned that she was Jewish and thence made a comment about those that “had escaped the ovens”, a comment which Ryder claims she did not understand at the time. Ryder then asserted that she believed that he was an anti-Semite and a homophobe but that “people did not believe her”.Gibson was arrested in 2006 on a charge of drunk driving. Reports at the time had indicated that Mel Gibson had made some anti-Semitic remarks while being arrested stating that he blamed them for the wars that have occurred over history. Mel Gibson later issued an apology for that incident.
