Yesterday, actress Basma took to Twitter to address her colleagues who were attending the opening ceremonies of the 35th Cairo International Film Festival, saying "I envy my colleagues who can go to the hairdresser, buy an evening gown to attend the opening ceremony of the Cairo festival at the Opera House, which is two steps away from Tahrir Square, while I went to the Opera House where I had to park my car so I could walk to Tahrir."
The opening ceremony of the 35th annual festival drew out filmmakers, actors, and critics alike in the glitzy Opera House despite the political overcast and the two-day-old sit-in at Tahrir Square opposing President Morsi's constitutional decree.
Basma also wrote, with a bit of pizazz, "I hope you will enjoy yourselves."
A number of actors and filmmakers were absent from the opening festivities last night, to the dismay of the festival's organizers and other attendees.
