The Cannes Film Festival, held every year on the French Riviera, will be opening this year with Baz Luhrmann's highly anticipated " The Great Gatsby" in 3D. This marks the second time the Australian director's work has opened the festival: " Moulin Rouge" opened Cannes in 2001 with a lavish party, and given the culture of opulence in the "Gatsby" source material, we can all expect something similar.
The film boasts a top-talent, A-list cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. DiCaprio will be attending the festival, which runs from May 15 to 26, for the first time since 2007.
This isn't the first incarnation of the generation-defining novel on screen. Robert Redford and Mia Farrow starred in the Oscar-winning "Gatsby" in 1974. It was also adapted for an A&E TV movie in 2000 that largely passed under the radar.
"The Great Gatsby," based on the seminal F. Scott Fitzgerald novel by the same name, will come out in American theaters on May 10, preceding Cannes by five days. Reception of a film at Cannes often has a substantial impact on its performances for the rest of the year. We can't wait to see how it receives "Gatsby."
