The trailer for Ryan Gosling's " Only God Forgives," directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, has been released ahead of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Fans should expect the same stylized violence, scant dialogue, and careful editing as the pair's last film, the widely acclaimed " Drive."
In the film Gosling plays an American running a Bangkok boxing club, a front for the family's drug business. He co-stars with Kristin Scott Thomas, who plays his cutthroat mafia godmother. Gosling has described the violence as "much more extreme" than in "Drive," for which Refn won best director at Cannes in 2011.
Gosling recently announced he's putting a halt on his acting career. He told the Associated Press, "I've lost perspective on what I'm doing. I think it's good for me to take a break and reassess why I'm doing it and how I'm doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does."
Humility will only further endear Gosling to his fan base. Following the announcement, a British company created a Ryan Gosling Hotline, the link, which rattles off his lines from " The Notebook" "as a coping mechanism for distraught fans."
