Jennifer Lopez has signed onto the Chilean drama "The 33" based on the true story of 33 Chilean miners who were trapped beneath the surface for 69 days before being miraculously rescued in 2010.

She joins Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro who have already signed onto the film, which was presented to foreign backers at the Cannes Film Festival last month.

Mike Medavoy is producing, and Patricia Riggen is directing with a script written by Miko Alanna and Jose Rivera. Medavoy was quick to secure the rights to the story in 2011. The disaster, in which dozens of miners were trapped half a mile beneath the Earth's surface following a cave-in, garnered worldwide media coverage. Banderas will be playing the role of Mario Sepulvedia, the charismatic miner nicknamed "Super Mario." Sheen will play his father, and Santoro one of the trapped miners. What character J-Lo will play is still unclear.

Lopez's last big on-screen role was in 2012's "Parker" alongside Jason Statham, who played a modern-day Robin Hood of sorts who gets caught up in a revenge scheme after being wronged by a former partner.
