Actress Eva Longoria has come to the defense of her new show "Devious Maids," which is being criticized for exploiting long-running stereotypes of Hispanic women.
The show hones in on five Latino housekeepers in affluent Beverly Hills, California. Damarys Ocana, executive editor of Latina magazine recently told ABC News, "There probably wasn't a Latina in the country who didn't initially roll her eyes of 'oh great, here we go again. Another Latina character that's a maid.
Longoria is co-producing the show with "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry. In defense of it, she recently said, "When we get any sort of backlash, sort of 'they are playing the stereotypical maids,' my immediate response is 'so you're telling me those stories aren't worth telling?
Supporters and detractors alike will have to wait to know the answer to that question and many others, as the show premieres on Lifetime this Sunday, June 23.
