The legendary Meryl Streep has taken on an impressive variety of roles in her career, but this next move may catch some by surprise. According to Deadline Hollywood, Streep is in talks with the Weinstein Company and Walden Media to join the adaptation of the young adult dystopian tale "The Giver" with Jeff Bridges.

The film is based on Lois Lowry's 1993 novel about a futuristic society in which memory and emotion have been completely eradicated. One individual, the Receiver, is chosen to preserve the memory of the past, but must be trained by the sage, elderly Giver, to be played by Bridges.

This would be Streep's first collaboration with "the dude" Jeff Bridges. Phillip Noyce will be directing, and Brenton Thwaites, a young Australian actor, has been cast as the story's hero Jonas. Meryl Streep would play the Chief Elder, charged with keeping things in order.

Production will begin in South Africa this October.
