American pop icon Cher has turned down an offer to become an ambassador for the sporting event and open the show at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, over the country's anti-gay legislation.

In an interview with a Canadian magazine, Cher stated that her decision was an objection to what she called “inhumane” policies.

These policies include the banning of “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations,” which sparked international backlash and protests from human rights campaigners, in addition to a wide resentment from a lot of American stars, including Lady Gaga, Madonna, and “Prison Break” star Wentworth Miller who recently announced his homosexuality.
