Egyptian-American Jehane Noujaim's documentary feature “The Square” is screening today at the 51st New York Film Festival.
The 104-minute documentary tells the story of six very different protesters during Egypt's whirlwind 2011 uprising. Starting from the tents of Tahrir in the days leading up to the fall of Mubarak, to the euphoria of victory into the uncertainties and dangers of the "transitional period" under military rule, the film provides an insider's view of the scrappy, idealistic and dedicated revolutionaries who've inspired many around world in the past two years.
Noujaim was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Kuwait and Cairo. She went to Harvard to study visual arts and philosophy. Before “The Square” she directed six other documentaries, one the controversial “Control Room,” about the US Central Command and its relations with Al Jazeera and other news organizations that covered the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
