Everyone’s favorite satirist Bassem Youssef, host of the popular “ El Bernameg,” confirmed that the show will be making its comeback on Friday October 25th on CBC, denying rumors that the showhad been cut indefinitely. He tweeted on Wednesday, "Sorry to disappoint fans of the rumors mill, we will be back on the same channel Friday 25th of October."
The immensely popular show, boasting 30 million viewers at one point, took a hiatus for the month of Ramadan, but did not resume afterwards. In July, Youssef indicated the show would return in the fall, a date that was pushed further after the death of his mother in September.
This will be a much-anticipated return for Youssef. News of the show returning to the air comes three months after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, perhaps the central target of Youssef's biting humor. With Morsi still in detention in an undisclosed location, most of the Muslim Brotherhood's leadership behind bars, and following the deaths of hundreds of Brotherhood supporters throughout a tumultuous summer, the picture is much bleaker.
Admittedly, Youssef says he's been stripped of most of his source material: "It's shameful and wrong for this type of programme to disappear just because the regime has fallen, and we do not have a president who delivers speeches or [Islamist] channels that make mistakes," he said in a TV interview in July. Nevertheless, his millions of fans will be looking forward to his return.
