Alexandria Film Festival's management was taken by surprise upon knowing that Syrian director Mohamed Malas has been banned from entering Egypt to attend the festival's opening ceremony.

Malas sent a letter to the Egyptian minister of culture Dr. Gaber Assfour, deploring the Egyptian authorities actions, banning him from entering the country for the second time in 5 months, as he was earlier expecting an honoring from Ismaileya Film Festival.

The festival is expected to honor Malas despite his absence, and will screen his latest film “Sullam Ila Dimashq” (Stairway to Damascus) as part of the festival's official competition line-up.
