The play exposes the exploitation of religion in politics and the collapse of corrupt regimes, through the rise of the Russian monk Rasputin to the court of Tsar Nicholas II, as he exploits religion for influence, which arouses the anger of the nobles and leads to his death, and then the fall of tsarist rule.
