As the Ottomans raid an estate for provisions, a military conscription group comes with them and summons the young men of the village for recruitment, including Hajj Darwish’s sons, and Ahmed, the son of Mahmoud Salman, the richest man in the estate.
Ismail and Yunus are sent to the training camp. A man spies on the camp, overhears Ismail's friend badmouthing the Turks and tells the commander, who orders his execution at the hands of his friend Ismail.

Jamal Pasha decides to execute Omar and his fellow officers, and when the officer puts Ismail's paper in front of him, the Pasha asks the interrogator about Ismail, whom he’s told is a simple-minded man, so he decides to leave his paper aside.

As Ismail arrives at the cave, he meets his wife, Fadda, who tells him that his mother has died, one of his brothers has disappeared and the other one has lost his sight.
Hajj Darwish tells Fadda that the military conscription group is looking everywhere for his son, Ismail, who goes with his friend to deliver Officer Omar's last message.
As Ismail tells his friend, Fajr, that they must leave the country, Fajr tells him that he has an uncle in Venezuela. Huda, Hussein's wife, devises a plan so that people wouldn’t know the truth about Fadda’s pregnancy by her husband, Ismail, so that Mahmoud Salman wouldn’t get his land.
When Hajj Darwish learns that his son, Ismail, is hiding in the cave, he goes to look for him, and as Ismail sees him, he sends his friend, Fajr, to talk to him and reassure him about his safety.
Ismail and his friend, Fajr, go to the leader, Sheikh Saleh al-Ali, to whom Officer Omar sent Ismail to deliver Zalzal’s confession letter. Fadda's mother suspects that she has cheated on her husband, but Fadda tells her that her pregnancy is by her husband, Ismail.
