Upon his mother's death, Ahmed is taken in by his uncle Mansour, who oversees Shakir Bey's land. Ahmed recounts his childhood with Maryam and his dream of becoming a writer and journalist. As he publishes a novel, Maryam congratulates him, while Shakir rejects his son Tamer's love for her.
Tamer assures Maryam of his love. As Shakir accues Mansour of stealing his land and accuses his daughter Maryam of seducing Tamer, he asks the lawyer to file a lawsuit proving Mansour's theft. Ahmed travels to Cairo, where he helps an old man get home, but the man falls dead.
Tamer justifies to Maryam the news of his engagement, saying that his father is forcing it on him for the family’s good. Tamer asks Mansour to marry Maryam, but he refuses, which saddens her. Ahmed lives in the old man’s apartment after his death and meets his granddaughter.
Shakir gets angry at Tamer for going to Mansour's house, and forces him to visit Samia, whom he betrothed to, while Shakir proposes to Samia’s mother, Ahlam. Ahmed tries to console Nawal, the old man’s granddaughter, and tries to find out about her, so he watches her.
Maryam tells Ahmed that she loves Tamer and asks for his help, but he confesses his love for her, only to find out the she thinks of him as a brother. Tamer asks Ahmed to help him and Maryam, who refuses to go away with Tamer out of respect for her father. Mansour suggests to Ahmed to marry Maryam.
Before Maryam travels to her aunt in Cairo, she says goodbye to Tamer, whom Ahmed visits later with a letter from Maryam, and as Shakir tries to throw him out, Tamer stops him. As Tamer finds out where Maryam is, he goes to the house of her aunt, who thinks that they should get married.
Tamer's father won’t give him any money. Tamer welcomes his father’s marriage to Ahlam, as long as he doesn’t marry Samia, whom he tells of his love for Maryam. Ahmed convinces Mansour to marry Maryam to Tamer, who asks to delay the marriage till he gets his mother's inheritance, but Ahmed objects.
Tamer asks Samia to help him marry Maryam, but she tells him that she loves him, then he tells Maryam that they can’t get married due to his father’s refusal. Ahmed asks Maryam to preserve her dignity, return to her father’s house and forget Tamer. Salama tells Ahmed the story of Nawal.
Nawal asks to live with Ahmed, while the boss lady suspects Salama, and asks Khalil to look for her. Mansour's condition worsens as Maryam escapes from her aunt's house, to which she later returns after Tamer's reluctance to marry her.
Samia refuses to leave Tamer, challenging Maryam. Ahmed apologizes to Maryam for losing his temper, then informs her that her father is in a bad situation due to local gossip. Samia tells Maryam that she is the reason why Tamer won't marry her and that she won't leave him.
Shakir rages at Tamer for assaulting Samia after he follows him to Maryam's house. Ahmed suspects Salama as he frequents his house while Nawal is there, and tries to find her father. Shakir threatens Maryam and demands that she stay away from Tamer.
Samia hangs up on Maryam, whom Shakir warns Tamer to stay away from. Salama bargains with Shakir and tells him that he knows that Nawal is his daughter from Ehsan, who had a birth certificate issued with a different father’s name after he’d abandoned her.
Mansour leaves the village after being defamed, then goes with his wife to Maryam's aunt where he learns that Tamer reneged on the marriage. Salama tells Ahmed that Nawal is Shakir's daughter. As Mansour asks Shakir not to insult Maryam, he kicks him out. Salama asks Shakir to marry Tamer to Maryam.
Salama tells Ahmed that he has proof that Nawal is the daughter of Shakir, who tells Ahlam that Tamer must marry Maryam, then goes with him to propose to Maryam, who refuses after all that she’s suffered. Samia rejects Tamer. Nawal refuses to return to Shakir, who begs her for forgiveness.
