The series shows the alleys and their people in Egypt in the early 20th century under occupation and their sense of working for others and being humiliated and oppressed. This is paralleled by life inside palaces and the role of their residents in serving the occupier on the one hand and the palaces of those who loved their country, such as the leader Saad Zaghloul, on the other.
