Greg, an introvert child, struggles to deal with his family and his school, and suffers from his classmates. He decides to write about his experiences in a newspaper.
After their summer vacation, Greg and his older brother Rodrick enter middle school. Having to deal with their parents foolish attempts to bring them closer together.
As summer vacation starts, Greg's plans to spend it playing video games are derailed by his father getting him an internship to prevent him from wasting the vacation doing nothing. In order to avoid it, Grey claims that he already has a job at the country club.
When the Heffleys plan to go on a family trip to attend Meemaw’s 90th birthday, it goes horribly wrong after Greg leaves to go to a video game convention.
